The Tongan people are deeply hierarchical — the hou'eiki (nobles) and commoners maintain distinct social roles governed by faka'apa'apa (respect protocols) — but also deeply communal, with the kainga (extended family network) providing a social safety net that has no equivalent in Western societies. Between July and October, humpback whales from Antarctic feeding grounds come to the warm Vava'u waters to calve and breed, and Tonga is one of the only places on earth where swimming with humpback whales in the open ocean is legally permitted.
