About this expedition

Every day of this expedition begins at the water's edge. Belize is an adventure water destination — where the second-largest barrier reef in the world runs the length of the coast, the Great Blue Hole drops 300 metres into the Caribbean Sea, rivers wind through jungle to ancient Maya ceremonial sites, and the Garifuna people have kept their African-Caribbean culture alive on the southern coast for centuries.

Daylite Digital is an accommodation curator. We secure your hotels across this entire Belize circuit — that is what your package price covers. All tours, activity fees, transfers, and meals are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators. The Daylite Ambassador is an optional service, available separately.

The Garifuna People · Africa, the Caribbean & the Sea

The Garifuna are one of the most remarkable peoples in the Americas — descendants of West African survivors of a shipwreck off the island of St Vincent in the 17th century, who intermarried with the indigenous Kalinago people and built a new culture rooted in both African and Caribbean traditions. When the British deported the Garifuna from St Vincent in 1797, they were exiled to the coast of Central America — arriving in Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, where they rebuilt their communities on the sea.

The Garifuna of Belize's southern coast — centred on Dangriga, Hopkins, and Placencia — have maintained their language, music, food, and spiritual practices across more than two centuries of displacement. Garifuna Settlement Day, celebrated on 19 November, commemorates the arrival of the first Garifuna settlers in Belize in 1823 and is one of the most vibrant cultural celebrations in Central America. Punta music, hudut fish stew, and the dugu ancestral ceremony are living expressions of a culture that refused to disappear.

The Maya of Belize built their civilisation in the jungle interior — at Caracol, Xunantunich, and Lamanai — and their descendants still live in the Cayo District today. Water was sacred to the Maya: rivers were portals to the underworld, and the sea was the edge of the known world. Belize holds both. All cultural experiences are arranged independently and paid to local operators at point of service.

Five Water Experiences · One Reef & Jungle Nation

Belize's barrier reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet. The Great Blue Hole is one of the world's top ten dive sites. The rivers of the Cayo District flow through jungle that sheltered Maya civilisation for two thousand years. All experiences below are paid directly to local operators at point of service.
