The three Coast Salish nations whose unceded territory Vancouver occupies — the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh — have lived on this land for at least 10,000 years. The word “unceded” carries enormous legal and political weight: unlike most of Canada, British Columbia was settled without treaties, meaning the Crown never formally acquired the land from its Indigenous owners. The Musqueam people have lived at the mouth of the Fraser River for millennia, managing one of the world’s great salmon fisheries. The Squamish Nation — whose territory extends from Vancouver to Whistler — are currently developing the Senakw project, one of the largest Indigenous-led real estate developments in Canadian history, on land adjacent to the Burrard Bridge.
The totem poles of Stanley Park represent the crests, histories, and family lineages of several First Nations, including the Kwakwaka’wakw and Haida peoples. They are not decorative objects: they are documents, recording genealogies and histories in a visual language that predates European contact. The Pacific salmon — which returns each autumn to the rivers of British Columbia — is central to the culture, economy, and spirituality of every Coast Salish nation.
