Departure
The Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia are one of Africa's most spectacular highland landscapes — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of dramatic escarpments, deep gorges, and jagged peaks rising to over 4,500 metres. Ras Dashen, Ethiopia's highest mountain at 4,550m, stands at the heart of this extraordinary range. The Simien Mountains are home to three of Africa's most remarkable endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
The Gelada baboon — the world's only grass-grazing primate — lives in herds of hundreds on the Simien plateau, their distinctive red chest patches glowing in the highland sun. The Ethiopian wolf, Africa's most endangered carnivore, hunts the high moorlands. The Walia ibex, a mountain goat found only in the Simien, clings to sheer cliff faces. This 8-day journey combines highland trekking, extraordinary wildlife, and the royal city of Gondar. Verified local Ambassadors guide every step.
The Simien Mountains were among the first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978, recognised for their outstanding natural beauty and extraordinary biodiversity. The range was formed by volcanic activity over 40 million years ago, creating one of Africa's most dramatic landscapes of flat-topped mountains, sheer escarpments dropping 1,500 metres, and deep river gorges. The Amhara people of the highlands have farmed these mountains for thousands of years, creating terraced fields that cascade down the escarpment walls.
