The Pueblo peoples of New Mexico are among the oldest continuously settled communities in North America. Their ancestors — the Ancestral Puebloans — built the great houses of Chaco Canyon between 850 and 1150 CE, creating a civilisation that stretched across the entire Colorado Plateau. Chaco was a ceremonial, astronomical, and trading centre, aligned with solar and lunar cycles, connected to outlying communities by a network of roads that stretched for hundreds of miles.
Taos Pueblo — continuously inhabited for at least 1,000 years — is the living embodiment of that tradition. The Taos people resisted Spanish colonisation, led the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 (the most successful Indigenous uprising against European colonisation in North American history), and have maintained their language, ceremonies, and way of life through four centuries of colonial pressure.
The Navajo Nation — the Diné — are the largest Native American nation in the USA by land area, occupying a territory the size of West Virginia across New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.
