Chinguetti is one of the most extraordinary cities in Africa — and one of the least visited. Founded in the 13th century as a staging post for Saharan caravans and pilgrims heading to Mecca, it became the 7th holiest city in Islam and one of the great centres of Islamic scholarship in West Africa. Today, its ancient libraries hold tens of thousands of medieval manuscripts — texts on astronomy, mathematics, theology, and law — slowly being consumed by the encroaching Sahara.
This 9-day safari takes you from Nouakchott across the Adrar Plateau to Chinguetti — through ancient ksour (fortified villages), across the great Saharan ergs, and into one of the most haunting and beautiful desert cities on earth. This is Mauritania for those who understand that the greatest treasures are the ones the world has forgotten.
Chinguetti was founded in 1264 and became one of the most important cities in the medieval Islamic world. At its peak, it was a gathering point for up to 30,000 pilgrims annually making the Hajj to Mecca. Its scholars produced manuscripts that are now recognised as among the most significant in African intellectual history. Five ancient library families still guard these manuscripts today — some dating back to the 13th century.
The Adrar region is the heartland of Mauritanian Moorish culture — a fusion of Berber, Arab, and sub-Saharan African traditions that produced one of the most distinctive civilisations in the Sahara. The Tuareg of the eastern desert are among the world's great nomadic peoples — their indigo-dyed robes, silver jewellery, and camel culture are among the most iconic in Africa.
