About This Expedition

Osaka is Japan's most unguarded city — louder, funnier, and hungrier than Tokyo or Kyoto, with a street food culture so serious that the city coined its own word for it: kuidaore, meaning "eat until you drop." Dotonbori's neon-lit canal is lined with takoyaki stalls, ramen shops, and kushikatsu bars where the rule is simple: no double-dipping. Osaka Castle, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583, rises above the city's largest park. Shinsekai, the retro district built to resemble Paris and New York in 1912, is now a time capsule of old Osaka — pachinko parlours, kushikatsu restaurants, and the Tsutenkaku Tower.

Kuromon Ichiba Market — Osaka's kitchen — has fed the city's restaurants for 190 years. Universal Studios Japan brings Hollywood spectacle to Osaka Bay, with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Nintendo World as its centrepieces. For Platinum travellers, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Miyajima Island — home to the floating torii gate — add one of Japan's most moving day trips to the circuit. This is a 9-day expedition through Japan's most appetising city.

Daylite Digital secures your accommodation across this Osaka circuit. All activity fees, entry fees, transport costs, and tour fees are arranged independently by the traveller and paid directly to local operators.

Naniwa · Merchant City · The People Who Built Osaka

Osaka was known as Naniwa in ancient times and served as Japan's first imperial capital before Nara and Kyoto. Its identity was forged not by samurai or emperors but by merchants — the chonin class who built Japan's first commodity exchanges, banking systems, and rice futures markets in the 17th century. The Osaka merchant's philosophy — "lose money, lose a little; lose trust, lose everything" — shaped a city culture built on hospitality, generosity, and the belief that good food is the foundation of good business.

Sumo wrestling has deep roots in Osaka. The city hosts the Spring Grand Tournament (Haru Basho) every March at Edion Arena Osaka, and sumo stables in the city maintain the sport's most ancient training traditions. Osaka-style sumo — historically distinct from Tokyo's style — was absorbed into the national system in 1925, but the city's passion for the sport remains undiminished. A sumo stable morning practice visit in Osaka is one of the most authentic sporting experiences in Japan.
